Frequently Asked Questions
Why The Weird Name?
Why Dandy Moon Soapery? Good question! I don't know....
The word 'Dandy' has several meanings but "something excellent in its class" and "very good" stood out to me, and its not a word you hear much anymore in daily use, so I thought it would stand out and be a name people remembered.
The 'Moon' portion of Dandy Moon was for no other reason that I have always been drawn to it. Maybe I'm a Selenophile? (a person who loves the moon for those who don't feel like giving that a google).
I combined the name with a great gatsby-esque and art deco aesthetic (things Im also drawn to) and BAM - my business was born.
Are You Toxic Free?
Yes!- My journey began when my son was tested for ADHD... I decided to begin investigating alternative methods that weren't medications. What started as a "you need to cut red 40" turned into me going down a rabbit hole concerning our foods, our cleaning products, our body care, etc.
That was 13 years ago... and during that time I have searched high and low, while studying and learning ingredients so I was well versed in label reading, only to realize products that WERE good were way too expensive and not as accessible to everyone, while also realizing the ones that were affordable weren't honest about what they offered
So I said to myself (as I do in most cases- its who I am) "I can do that better!" and here we are
My products are free of - parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroluem, sulfates, silicones, and so much more - basically if it is not safe on the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database it can't and won't be in my products.
To add to that - Eco Friendly and Sustainability are at the forefront of my packaging and products - all my packaging is either paper or 100% recyclable and BPA Free, making me as close to zero waste as I can be. I hope to one day be able to offer refillable options as well. Stay tuned for that! Read more about that in the "What standards do you implement?" Section below
Where can I find you?
Either find me right here on the website, where shipping turnaround is 1-2 business days, or choose the local pickup option at checkout if you are in Cleveland, TN.
I am also located in The Heaven & Earth Collective in Bradley Square Mall (200 Paul Huff Pkwy, Cleveland TN) during their business hours - Wed - Sat 11-7 / Sun 12-4
You can also fine my set up in Bronzilla Spray Tan here in Cleveland TN - as I am the only soap she's found that cleanses, but gentle enough to not wipe out your spray tan!
AND the massage oil behind Jennie Thomas, massage therapy - here in Cleveland TN! If she has used a wonderfully smelling oil that makes your skin feel silky and supple when you leave, that's my body oils!
Im always looking to collaborate with other entrepreneurs, so if you might be interested in using my products in your business or along side it, reach out and lets see what we can come up with
What Standards do you Implement?
I have a strict set of guidelines and rules I hold myself to in my products and business.
First, I research every ingredient I use. If its a plant based butter or oil ingredient, it must be cold pressed, USDA organic, gmo free, and cosmetic grade. Suppliers must be transparent so I can be too. The standard has to be set at the foundation and how can that be implemented if I don't start with the ingredients themselves. I also don't use oils and butters that I believe don't meet my standards, like palm oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc. I am not yucking anyone else's yum, but not every oil made the cut of what I felt was 'high end' due to its questionable mass production or because it contributed to mass deforestation.
If it is a chemical compound ingredient, it also must be plant derived and be low on the EWG scale (within 0-2). None of my ingredients can be a concern for contributing to: cancer, developmental or reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, organ toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicity, or contamination concerns. If I wouldn't trust it with my family, Im not going to trust it with yours!
My product packaging must be Eco-Friendly as well, which is why I only use either paper products or 100% recyclable plastics in my packaging.
My Shipping boxes are reused peanuts and boxes from my suppliers.
I hope to one day also become a refillable shop but as of now I don't have the room or available logistics to implement that.
Most importantly my products must meet your standards! What good is having clean toxic free ingredients if the product itself makes your skin itchy, the body care doesn't make you feel moisturized and silky smooth, the shampoo and conditioner doesn't make you wanna stop using the bottles from the big store?? None. It's a fine line to walk but it means the most to me to check all the boxes.
Do you ever change your ingredients?
Sometimes! My bar recipe has changed twice - The first time was due to a worldwide crop issue with cocoa - I removed cocoa butter due to the fires that ravaged the crop about a year or so ago. It caused a huge price increase in cocoa, making cocoa butter prices quadruple overnight. Due to that, I replaced it with a similar butter and reworked my recipe until it met my standards. I will always do this in order to maintain the prices I have. I want my bars to always be financially accessible and though I have been told time and time again that I don't charge enough, I will always rework before increasing prices.
I did this with Olive Oil as well. The same happened with a huge increase in Olive Oil and in order to maintain my pricing I cut and replaced it.
With the knowledge I have in soap making, and cosmetic formulating, I will always find comparable ingredients and go back to the drawing board before I pass the cost off to the customer.
